The air is a little fresher, the days are becoming shorter and the back to school ads are on TV as Fall edges closer. I always look at a new season as if it is a new beginning. I look back and take a look at my fitness goals. Did I do what needs to be done to meet my goals over the past few months of the previous season? A new season is also a time that I make appointments. I need a haircut and a massage. As you get the kids ready for school, try not to forget about yourself. We all want to achieve and maintain wellness, so here are a few suggestions to do just that.
1. Book your yearly physical if you haven’t already. I always reserve my yearly physical right before September. I know that soon Thanksgiving and yes, Christmas will be upon us shortly and I’ll be way too busy with the bustle. Remember, before many medical check-ups you may be required to fast, or get extra sleep. Do you really want such restrictions over the holidays? Check in with your doctor now. As my dad says, we listen to our cars when they are making odd noises, or something doesn’t feel right with the brakes. Do the same with your body. Is something not feeling right? A lingering pain? We must be advocates of our own health and know the signs when something is not feeling as it usually does. Take care of yourself!
2. Do not neglect your oral health. Put your best smile forward for Fall. Plaque build-up can have serious repercussions down the road. Schedule a deep cleaning and a polish to get rid of those coffee and wine stains. Ensure you are flossing in addition to brushing. Flossing removes the plaque in places that the toothbrush misses. This is how my cleaning is when I haven’t been flossing daily. Ouch! Aren’t we done yet? (drool, drool, suction.) This is how my cleaning is when I have been flossing daily. What? We’re done already? That was easy! (drool, drool, suction, rinse, done.) Then I get my sample of floss, toothpaste, my shiny new toothbrush and I am on my way until the next 6 months.
3. Reassess your fitness goals. Do you need to lose or gain weight? Increase your stamina, flexibility or strength? Are you not eating enough of something or too much of it? Are you seeing the goals you want to see? I know I need to take a good hard look at my personal fitness goals, and really hit the weight room with added dedication. I recently tweaked my diet by increasing my protein intake. What about you? Any changes or tweaking necessary to bring you closer to your goals?
4. Do not ignore your mental/emotional health. Feeling overly anxious, worried or depressed. Your community is full of people to talk to. Professionals such as a pastor or therapist, or even a friend or family member who can listen and may be able to guide you on the right path to mental clarity. Prayer, meditation and Yoga have helped me immensely with my anxiety and worry. Never suffer alone. Life is too short and precious.
5. Have a happy and active fall. Throw on that wooly sweater and visit the pumpkin patch, or go on a hike to see the breath-taking foliage. Buy squash, eggplant and other healthy vegetables this harvest season to add to recipes and enjoy.
