Brown Bagging it- Pt. 2. Jazzing up your Sandwich

Want to make your sandwich a healthy choice at lunch? Here are a few heart healthy tips all courtesy of the health initiative at my workplace.
TASK: Bring tomorrow’s lunch in a new “home” for your sandwich.  Mix it up and try something new!!

Task # 2: Mix up your sandwich

Chicken salad sandwiches, egg sandwiches, tuna and more. What makes a great healthy sandwich?

  • Consider your bread. The same filling can taste quite different when it’s in a soft white bread, to when it’s tucked into a hearty wholemeal roll with seeds on top
  • Truly healthy sandwich recipes will always avoid white bread because it is lacking in fibre. If you really love white bread, look for a variety that has half and half white and whole grain flour. Kids will often accept this compromise for their favorite white bread.
  • Otherwise, always start with good, fresh, whole grain bread or rolls, or try whole wheat pitas or wraps instead. Look for words “whole grain” in the ingredient list so you know you’re getting the best bang for your buck.
  • Or try skipping bread all together. Wrap your fillings up in lettuce or top some brown rice crackers with tuna, veggies or cheese.

Enjoy your work week and jazz up that healthy sandwich! I’m off to buy some whole wheat pitas right now.

  1. Aww, I can’t do bread too much anymore. I discovered a gluten allergy recently so I avoid bread most times but I miss it so much! I love sandwiches and still eat them from time to time.

  2. Funny how allergies can develope later in life. You guys used to love bread as children! Try making wraps with leafy greens. I’ve done spinach wraps a few times and I really didn’t miss the bread.
